Ethiopia, Africa’s second-most populous nation, is facing one of the world’s most severe humanitarian crises. The country is grappling with the aftermath of armed conflicts, extreme food insecurity, mass displacement, and climate shocks such as devastating droughts and floods. Over 20 million Ethiopians require urgent humanitarian assistance, with conflict-stricken regions like Tigray, Amhara, and Oromia bearing the brunt of the suffering.
A Nation on the Brink
The humanitarian emergency is driven by multiple factors:
Conflict and Violence: Despite the November 2022 ceasefire between the Ethiopian government and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), fighting continues in Amhara and Oromia. Armed groups clash with government forces, leaving civilians in the crossfire.
Food Insecurity and Famine Risk: Ethiopia remains one of the countries most at risk of famine, with

Climate Disasters: Ethiopia has suffered 5 consecutive failed rainy seasons, resulting in its worst drought in 40 years. The drought has killed

Mass Displacement: Ongoing violence and economic turmoil have displaced 4.5 million people internally, with Ethiopia also hosting over 1 million refugees from neighboring countries like South Sudan, Somalia, and Sudan.
A History of Crisis and Conflict
Ethiopia has faced humanitarian challenges for decades, from the devastating 1983-85 famine, which killed over 1 million people, to the long-standing conflicts between the Ethiopian government and regional rebel forces.
The Tigray War (2020-2022) caused immense suffering, with both sides accused of human rights violations, including deliberate starvation, destruction of food supplies, and massacres. The aftermath of this conflict left an entire region in economic ruin, with slow reconstruction efforts and continued armed clashes undermining peace initiatives.
Impact on Children
Children are the most vulnerable in this crisis:

Aid efforts and challenges
Humanitarian organizations, including the UN, IRC, and Red Cross, are working to deliver food, medical aid, and shelter. However, aid efforts are hindered by ongoing violence, logistical challenges, and funding shortages.
In 2024, only 33.5% of Ethiopia’s $4 billion Humanitarian Response Plan was funded.
To make matters worse, food aid theft has led to the suspension of assistance by major donors, leaving millions without essential food supplies.
Calls for action
- The UK, EU, and the United States have pledged humanitarian aid, BUT funding gaps remain.
- The Ethiopian government has called for greater international cooperation, but conflict in the Amhara and Oromia regions has disrupted aid distribution.
The UN has warned that if immediate action is not taken, Ethiopia could face a full-scale famine similar to the catastrophic famine of the 1980s. The humanitarian community urges governments, international organizations, and individuals to contribute resources to prevent further devastation.
