Sudan is facing one of the most severe humanitarian crises in the world today, following a violent outbreak of conflict that began on April 15, 2023. The clash between the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has plunged the nation into chaos, with over 25 million people currently experiencing extreme food insecurity.
Agriculture, which supports approximately 70% of the Sudanese population, has been devastated as fighting disrupts farming activities. This conflict not only threatens the immediate safety and well-being of the population but also jeopardizes the future of a generation reliant on agriculture for their survival.
The impacts of this ongoing violence extend beyond immediate physical threats:
The humanitarian landscape is characterized by,
Displacement numbers include the highest number of IDPs (Internally Displaced People) in the world
- 10.83 million people are IDPs.
- 8.1 million people have been displaced.
- 2.34 million people have crossed into neighboring countries.
- 52% of IDPs are under the age of 18.
These conditions make humanitarian aid not just important, but critical to preventing a complete collapse.
Impact on Vulnerable Groups
Beyond hunger, these vulnerable groups face increased risks of gender-based violence due to the chaos caused by the conflict. Schools have been closed, robbing children of their education and exposing them to unsafe environments. If help doesn’t arrive soon, this generation will face lifelong consequences, both physically and mentally.
Why aid is crucial NOW
With the lean season approaching and floods threatening to worsen the crisis, immediate aid is more important than ever. The UN warns that famine is looming, particularly in areas like Al-Fasher City and the Zamzam IDP Camp. However, as the UN's humanitarian chief, Martin Griffiths, emphasizes, "people can be rescued from famine, starvation, and disease" with timely assistance. This means that the sooner aid reaches those in need, the more lives can be saved.
Raising awareness about Sudan’s crisis is key. Share reliable information, support fundraising efforts, and encourage those around you to get involved. Together, we can help save lives in Sudan.
